Nancy Kaye cites a report of his baptism in 1814 'at eighteen months' at Saint George's Anglican Church in Halifax. Teal shows birth date as 1822.†I have assumed that this is the same Jacob Conrod who is shown as 60 years old and living next to the Bissetts in Cole Harbour in the 1871 census.

Event Note -

It is somewhat speculative that this Johannnes Conrod is the husband of Catherine Halter and the father of her children. The strongest argument in its favor is that the family of Susan Elizabeth Conrod is said to have lived in Lawrencetown at the time of her marriage in 1840. This is consistent with the early presence of the children of Jacob Conrod in the area and somewhat before the known presence of other Conrod families.

Conrod, John Stewart (1818 - ) - male
b. 18 FEB 1818 in Lawrencetown, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

father: Conrod, Thomas (1782 - 1858)
mother: McManamy, Cecily (~1790 - 1858)
It is not completely certain that the wife and family attributed to John Stuart Conrod, son of Thomas Conrod, might not actually be that of his cousin John, son of Jacob Conrod - or perhaps even to another John. Although the documentary evidence seems to support that it is John Stuart Conrod (e.g. "John S. Conrod" named as the father in the children's baptismal records and Lawrencetown given as the residences), there are some lingering doubts. †As shown in Thomas' 1858 will, John was considered incapable of caring for himself and thus would seem not likely to ever marry.
One should also note, that there may have been another, unrelated, Conrad family living in Lawrencetown at the time.

Census - [date: 1838] [place: Lawrencetown, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada]

shown as a farmer living in Lawrencetown N.S. with one male and one female in the age range 7 - 14, five males over 14, and 3 females over 14 in the household in addition to himself.

Census - [date: 1851] [place: Lawrencetown, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada]

He is shown as a farmer with 20 acres of 'dyke land' living in Lawrencetown N.S. with one female in the age range 10-20, three males and two females 20-30, one male and one female over 50, including himself.

Will - [date: 14 FEB 1858] [place: Cole Harbour, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada]

The will is especially significant in that it is the only known source document that identifies "Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Bissett of Sydney Cape Breton" as his daughter. She is left £15 to purchase mourning clothes. The land and the bulk of the estate is left to sons Joseph and Charles. They are obligated to provide "all necessary board, lodging, clothing, and medical attendance during his life" to their brother John, who was evidently disabled and unable to care for himself. The three unmarried daughters (Rosannah, Mary, and Rebecca) were left £50, £45, and £40 respectively - to be paid in 3, 5, and 7 years respectively. These unmarried daughters were also given one cow and two sheep each and the right to live in the family house and be maintained by Joseph and Charles until their marriage. Sons Thomas, William, James, and Jacob are left nothing because "they are already sufficiently provided for". Joseph, Charles, and Rosanna are named executors. Stephan Bissett and Alex James were two of the witnesses

Birth Note

Calculated from age given, 53 years, at the time of Jeanne Dorau's birth.
spouse:
----------child: Dorau, Marie (1789 - )
Dorau, Jeanne (1811 - 1894) - female
b. 24 APR 1811 in Anglet, Bayonne North-West, Basse Pyrenee, France
d. 08 OCT 1894 in D'Escousse, Richmond, Nova Scotia, Canada

father: Jeanne, ?? (*1781 - )
mother: Dorau, Marie (1789 - )
According to the autobiography of her great-grandaughter (Emma Bissett), Jeanne ran off with a Captain Pertus, perhaps an early beau - taking her daughter, Melanie, but leaving her husband and older boy behind. She is also said never to have married Pertus.†Records in Saint-Louis, Senegal, confirm that Jeanne had two children while married to Jean Bareste: Urbain and Melanie, although the birth record of Melanie clearly implies that Jean Bareste was not the father of Melanie. It has been suggested that the person reporting the birth, Emanuel Dubois, may be the father. It also is possible that Jean Pertus may be the father. There are no records of any Pertus marriage in Senegal - or anywhere else, for that matter. The Pertus family settled at Cascaret Island near River Bourgeois about 1843. According to census records, the eldest Pertus boy was born in Charlestown, South Carolina, just prior to that. (Tradition in the family of Emma Bissett, on the other hand, holds that they lived for a time in New Orleans, not Charlestown.)

Burial - [date: 10 OCT 1894] [place: Saint Hyacinth's Church, D'Escousse, Richmond, Nova Scotia, Canada]

Event Event-Note - [date: 18 JUN 1885] [place: Barque "Jennie Cashman", Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts]

Jeanne is likely the same person identified as 'Madame Bareste', age 74, resident of Nova Scotia, who is shown arriving in Boston, Massachusetts on June 18, 1885 on the S.S. Bargue Jennie Cashman sailing from Sierra Leone, Africa. This was a small freighter carrying only one other passenger (not John Pertus) other than Madame Bareste.

Birth Note

Jeanne Dorau's marriage record, by omitting any reference to her father, suggests that she is illegitimate. Her birth place (Anglet, France) and date (24 Apr 1811) are given in the marriage record. The civil index to births there shows that in the whole month of April 1811 only one female child was born: a Jeanne Jeanne on 11 Apr 1811. ("Jeanne" is a proper surname that does appear in several other birth records and one death record in that same period.) The full record shows that the mother of the child was Marie Dorau and that the birth was reported by her father. It also explicitly shows the birth to be illegitimate. No father is named.

There are several problems associated with this person. First, it is difficult to explain the two marriages with a James Wilson. In addition, the first marriage is at an Anglican Church whereas she apparently was baptized as a Methodist. I do not know the denomination of the second marriage at the Three Mile House. Second, she is referred to as "Eliza" in the first marriage (and her baptism rercord) and as "Elizabeth" in the second.

I am not certain that this Isabella is a daughter of William Gammon and Eliza Ann MacKensie. No baptism record for her has been found. An older daughter of this couple, Eliza Ann, is identified in her 1855 marriage notice as the "second daughter of William Gammon of Cole Harbour". This Isabella's 1847 death notice, however, identifies her as the "second daughter of William Gammon of Lawrencetown". It is possible that Isabella is the daughter of the William Alexander Gammon who married Anna Barbara Himmelman in 1832 - but this would require that Isabella was a child of an earlier unknown marriage of this William Alexander.
