Although I cannot account for her presence in Illinois and thus am not certain that this 1900 census entry is for her, the evidence suggests that it is likely. She is identified here as Marie E. As contained in a footnote of the Vinton's 1864 Giles Memorial Genealogy: "The account which is given of this family was received from Mrs. Louisa Gillespie of Salem. She also says that her grandfather's name was Joseph Henry Giles; that he was tall and thin; he had a sash and tassel, a high cap with a waving plume, and, she thinks, a long sword, all of which he used to exhibit as worn by him in the Revolutionary War; and she says he was in the battle of Bunker Hill, and, as I understood, fought on the side of liberty. He was from Roxbury, or Salem. I am not sure of the identity of the grandfather of Mrs. Gillespie, with Henry Giles, . . . but consider it probable. " Vinton is wrong in his identification with the Henry Giles, who he shows to have been born in 1753 and been in the American artillery in the Revolution. Vinton may also have "seeded" the possibility in the mind of Mrs. Gillespie that her grandfather had been on the American side. Other research shows that he was a loyalist.

Property - [date: 20 SEP 1784] [place: Preston, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada]
He received a 200 acre grant as part of Theophilus Chamberlain's township grant.

Property - [date: MAY 1789] [place: Cole Harbour, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada]
Jacob Conrod sold land to his son-in-law Joseph Giles for £25. (sale was recorded in 1804) He is believed to have built a house on the property as an added gift. This house has been restored and relocated to the Cole Harbour Rural Heritage Museum as the "Giles House" exhibit.

Will - [date: 06 OCT 1836] [place: Cole Harbour, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada]

The 50 acres of land in Cole Harbour went to wife Catherine; land in Preston to daughter, Mrs. Bissett

Event Note -

Narrative from Peter Jangaard - Stephen was born in Halifax, NS and came to the US as a young man. He came west to Binghamton where he settled after his marriage to Delphine Monroe. He worked as a conductor on the street cars when they were horse drawn and later electrically driven. George Greene (Stephen's grandson) believes he did some farming. As he remembered him, he was a salesman of real estate and other things. After retirement he lived in Elmira,NY with his daughter Louise. He died in Elmira of a heart attack. He had helped remove a tree from the street after a severe windstorm. He and Delphine are buried in Floral Avenue Cemetery in Johnson City, NY.

Birth Note

It is likely that he was actually born in Massachusetts (as indicated in the various US censuses) and only baptized when visiting relatives in Nova Scotia

Near the end of May, a terrific forest fire broke out on the Eastern Coach Road and raged along a 15 mile front towards Dartmouth. A new house and barn on the farm of Wentworth and Benjamin Green, about 3 miles from Marshall's Tavern at Porto Bello, were totally destroyed.(Martin:The Story of Dartmouth.) Wentworth later moved to Massachusetts and lived in East Boston. His father Henry died at his house in 1853.

She may have died en route to Rotterdam with the family of her mother and step-father. The Brevilliers' exit-lists show the Bizets as leaving with three daughters, yet the passenger list from Rotterdam show them as sailing with just two daughters. These two daughters are accounted for in Nova Scotia. The most likely "third daughter" would be Catherine Elizabeth, who was 17 years old and possibly not yet married.

Death Note

She likely died enroute to the port of Rotterdam, while accompanting her mother and step-father to Nova Scotia.

Harper, George (*1754 - ) - male
In his petition for the land grant, George Harper says he has a wife, two daughters, and two sons

The Grace Harper who married John Maskell at Saint Paul's in Halifax on 13 Dec 1817 might be a daughter of George Harper and Catherine Bissett. If so, she likely was born about 1795

Property - [date: FEB 1786] [place: Cole Harbour, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada]
Bissett and Harper applied for a grant of 1,100 acres in Cole Harbour in late 1785 or early 1786. The grant was approved for survey in February 1786, with the survey certified on March 13, 1786. The grant was approved on 19 March 1786 and issued on 6 Apr 1786. They were granted 600 acres, only 200 of which were designated for Harper. In the application George Bissett claims to have been farming the land with George Harper on license from Governor Hughes since 1781 and to have seven sons and five daughters. This grant is identified in the Jan 1809 inventory of George Bissett's estate and valued at £40.

On the other hand, he is much older than any daughter of Catherine Wiley and she would have had to have been his second wife.

Marriage Note

spouse: Bissett, George Frederick (b1769 - 1834)
- m. 14 FEB 1823 in Christ Church, Dartmouth, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Marriage Note

There is no documented reason why this second marriage took place between these same individuals. It suggests, however, that George Frederick Bissett's English wife may have been left behind in England when he returned to Nova Scotia after leaving the Navy. Sometime after the earlier marriage to Mary Ann Maddox, it may have been discovered that his first wife was still alive - thus requiring a second marriage after he could prove her death. Supporting this hypothesis is the fact that George Frederick is listed as a "widower" in this marriage record.
