spouse:
McGrath, Mary Ann (<1829 - ) - female
b. BEF 1829 in Nova Scotia, Canada
The identification of Mary Ann McGrath and the various conclusions regarding her marriages and children are for the most part based on indirect evidence and plausible speculation. The starting point is the 1880 census that can be used to identify her as the widow of Samuel Bissett and the grandmother of Elmer Kuhn and Elaine Butler. Kuhn asserts that this widow of Stephen Bissett had previously been married to Samuel Wambolt and was the mother of the Melissa Wambolt who had married Alexander Kuhn and bore him the son, Elmer Kuhn. Swan has found the marriage of a Mary Ann Wambolt to Frederick Butler. These suggest the possibility that Mary Ann Wambolt and Melissa Wambolt were the two female children living with Stephen Bissett and his wife in the 1861 census.

Residence - [date: 1887] [place: Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota]

She appears on her own without mention of her husband in the City Directory

Census - [date: 1880] [place: Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota]

Shows her as a widow running a boarding house and identifies Elmer Kuhn and Elaine Butler as her grandchildren.

Birth Note

Her age as given in the 1880 census gives a birth year of 1839, but this is inconsistent with the hypothesis that she is the mother of Melissa Wambolt. The 1861 census puts it between 1821 and 1831.

A Pierre Metin, son of Nicholas Metin married a Marie Catherine Baisnier, daughter of Jean Pierre Baisnier. This is the only Metin encountered in the Montbeliard records. A Montbeliard referrence work cites Metin in Bethoncourt in 1712, in Byans in the 1600s, and in Laire in 1754.

A 17 year old brother, Jean Nicholas Metin, is shown in his own entry on the passenger list of the 1752 sailing of the Sally. There are no other entries for any Metins in any of the passenger lists. Bell's notes (at the Public Archives of Nova Scotia), however, show both a Jean Nicholas and Judith Metin on the victualling lists in Halifax. The only evidence for a sister to Judith being present is Bell's hypothesis that the surname of the bride (Anna Judith) in an 1757 marriage of Jean Nicholas Boutelier should read 'Metin', rather than 'Mehr' , as it appears to have been originally recorded. 'Planters and Pioneers' is said to show Judith and a sister, Anna Judith, arriving on the Sally in 1752, although their parents are not shown on the passenger list. It is likely that this source is based upon Bell's notes. An analysis of the passenger list for the 1752 Sally suggests that Judith (and her sister, if she had one) may have traveled with the family of Jacques Boutilier.

Her name is shown in the Brevilliers' records most often as Metthey, but also as Metthe and Mettey. Her birth record is in sequence for January 1703, but the recorded date shows a '3' over-written by a '4'. This may have been the result of the 'official' record actually having been copied from an earlier draft copy

The evidence regarding her date of birth is very inconsistent. The 1881 census shows her age as 51, implying a birth year of 1829/30. The transcription of her marriage record shows the date of marriage to be 9 Jun 1832, implying a much earlier birth date - 1812 or so at the latest. The ages of her children as shown in the 1881 census (22, 20 and 13) would, however, roughly limit an estimate of her birth date to the range 1823 to 1838. Since her sister Caroline (born ~ 1819) is identified as the "third daughter" and we know that Eleanor and Mary Louise were born earlier, this Ann Catherine must be a later child. Assuming that the ages of the children in the 1838 census were correctly known by the census taker, that census has room for her only if she were 14 years or older - implying a birth year before mid-1824. In this regard, it is more likely that the age of Sarah was underestimated by a year or so; thus leaving room for Ann Catherine to be one of the females under 14. Weighing all this, it would seem as though the marriage date is grossly in error - perhaps it is a mis-transcription of 1852, rather than 1832? An estimate for her birth date of about 1829 causes the least problems

If we assume, as is likely, that the age of daughter Sarah Elizabeth was slightly underestimated by the census-taker, we can bracket the birth dates of several unknown children. That 1838 census, coupled with the baptism record of Mary Louise (which identifies her as the sixth child) and the marriage record of Caroline (which identifies her as the third daughter), implies that: 1) one additional son was born before 1817 and he was no longer living in the household; 2) one additional daughter was born between 1819 and 1824 and was living in the household; 3) another additional daughter was born between 1824 and 1832 and was living in the household; and 4) two more daughters were born after 1832 and were living in the household.

The 1827 census counts four additional members of the family living in the household - three unknown females and one male.

Several "speculative" children have been deduced and included among his children. Their existence is based, inter alia, on the 1827 and 1838 censuses of his household (q.v.). Note that either the unknown female born about 1827 or Eleanor would have to have died before 1838 to be consistent with that census

Müller, Tobias E. (1750 - 1813) - male
b. 1750 in Fulda, Hesse, Germany
d. 24 APR 1813 in Preston, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
He was among the Hessian mercenaries who fought on the side of Great Britain in the America Revolution. His unit was the Hesse-Kassel Chasseurs, which were formed in April 1777. They were transported to America in a convoy which departed Portsmouth on 7 Apr 1777. They arrived in New York on 3 June 1777 as reinforcements to the Hessian units that had taken part in Howe's invasion of New York City in 1776. They took up garrison duty in the captured city, fighting in various small battles in the vicinity. They sailed from New York on 26 Dec 1779 as part of Cornwallis' Southern Campaign, arriving at Edisto Inlet, about 30 miles south of Charlestown, South Carolina, on 11 Feb 1780.
HETRINA, an index to the records of the Hessian troops in America, shows four entries for a Tobias Müller, born in Fulda. The index shows him as appearing in the records of the Jäger Korps as a deserter in February 1780 and in June 1780. He is also shown there as sentenced to execution in June 1780 and as returning from captivity in November 1780. Finally, he is shown as having been discharged 'in America' from the Knyphausen Regiment in February 1782. Examination of the Regimental records themselves corrects the date of his discharge to February 1781. The entry in the regimental records for that month show: 'The former Corporal Tobias Müller born at Fulda, age 30 Y., with 4 1/2 Y. service, has been discharged with the permission of the General Lieutn. von Knyphausen on 18 Feb. 1781. He had deserted in June 1780 to French service, and from there he did come back, which demonstrated some character wherein some trust could be assessed.' Sometime in 1781, he joined the South Carolina Loyalist Regiment as an "Ensign" and served with them to the end of the war. This is supported by the entry in the muster roll of the South Carolina Loyalist Regiment which describes him as a former Hessian soldier. The fact that this was the Tobias Miller who came to Nova Scotia is then supported by the fact that the will of his wife, "Margaret Miller of Halifax" is described as "relict of Tobias Miller, Ensign in Regiment of South Carolina Loyalists . . . ".

Birth Note

Date estimated from age in death certificate. This has some credibility, since the informant is listed as her husband. Her birthplace is shown as "France" on the certificate. The 1891 census gives her age as 51 and the 1901 census gives it as 60

Cause of death is shown as "accute bronchitis"
spouse: Roy, Edouard (~1835 - <1869)
- m. 16 JAN 1860 in Saint Hyacinth's Church, D'Escousse, Richmond, Nova Scotia, Canada

Marriage Note

The record actually shows the bride's surname to be "Soloman". These record were not made contemporaneously, but rather were reconstructed by a Rev. William LeBlanc of Arichat about twenty years later from scattered slips of paper. It seems probable that the Fr. LeBlanc knew of Eugenie as the then Mrs. Soloman and used that surname when reconstructing this record. The same is true for the record of the birth of their child, Edward. That the bride's surname was truly Pertus is consistent with the latter census records showing an Edward of the right age living with Eugenie and her second husband.

The ages given in the 1881 and 1891 censuses put his birth date circa 1843. The 1871 census, however, is consistent with the 1841 birth date which is also given in the 1901 census. His death record shows a birthdate of 10 Dec 1842. It should be noted that the 1871, 1881, and 1891 censuses and his death record all give his birth place as Charleston, S. C. (the 1871 census actually reads "N. C.")

Event Note -

Admitted to Bar of Nova Scotia in 1872. One of the founders of Dalhousie Law School. Attended the Grace Methodist Church. Born in a cottage in Dartmouth, which stood at 21 Dundas Street. Educated for the bar, he was an outstanding leader in the public life of Dartmouth until well along in middle life. Professor Russell was particularly aggressive during the contest with the Steam Boat Company when the Town took over the ferry system in the summer of 1890. During the eight years that he sat in Parliament, Dr. Russell commuted between Ottawa and Halifax every week in order to carry on his classes at Dalhousie Law School. When he came home after winning the election in Hants County in 1900, enthusatic law students joined local liberals in a torchlight procession through Dartmouth up to his home where, between band selections, they serenaded their beloved 'Benny' with stirring songs and College cheers. Dr. Russell retired from politics in 1904, and for the suceeding 20 years was a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia. About that time the family moved to Halifax. His Autobiography contains many interesting and humorous anecdotes of people and place in 19th century Dartmouth.

Stevens, Elizabeth (*1748 - ) - female
She is most likely the Elizabeth Stevens found in the Halifax Victualling Lists from the period covering 21 Aug 1752 to 29 Oct 1752 through to that ending in Apr 1753. Assuming that she appears alone without familiy (as is implied by Kim Stevens), this implies that she is an adult and probably a widow. The dates suggest that she may have been among the original settlers going to Lunenburg in May 1753. In this regard, it is possible she accompanied some family as a servant.
